Access permit

What is an access permit and why it is necessary?

Access permit regulates obtaining, possessing and using genetic materials of plant, animal, microbial or other origin containing functional units of heredity (Genes). To access genetic resources, one is required to apply to NEMA for an access permit using a prescribed format.

Why the Access Permit is necessary.

a. To guard against illegal access, utilization and exploitation of Kenya’s genetic resources.
b. To ensure that the Kenyan government and affected communities share in the benefits that result from exploitation, utilization and commercialization of genetic resources accessed in Kenya.
c. To ensure that records of genetic resources accessed are kept.
d. To monitor the use of genetic resources accessed in Kenya both locally and abroad.
e. To advance knowledge arising from research on genetic resources accessed in Kenya.
