The day commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union on 17th may 1965 . There are various forms of telecommunication which includes telephone, internet and e-mail.
Internet services started in Kenya in 1994/95 under the then Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Cooperation. The Communications Commission of Kenya was established in February 1999 and act as the communications regulator. In 1995 there was only one internet service provider in Kenya and this grew to 61 in 2001 . The number of internet users has grown tremendously and there same applies to the number of websites in Kenya. The internet has immense potential in information transaction for business, education, health, environment and in many other facets of life. It is important in transforming the country into a modern information and knowledge -based economy.
Suggested activities
- Visit a cyber cafe and look for environmental information from the internet.
- Explore ways of gathering local environmental information that can later be disseminated to other people.
- If you have no access to internet, communicate environmental information through display of posters, news paper cuttings, etc.
- Organize a fundraising event such as charity walk to buy computers and to install internet services to the school and community centre near you.
- Hold a discussion on how telecommunication enhances information dissemination especially on the environment and give suggestions on how this can be improved for your local area
- Write an essay or summary notes on how you celebrated the World Telecommunication Day. Publicise your success on this blog.
